A 21-year-old inmate has been charged over the incident. He had been scheduled to appear at Linlithgow Sheriff Court but was not fit enough to leave hospital.
Mr Tobin had been due to appear at Linlithgow Sheriff Court on Friday for a full committal hearing, which will now take place in his absence. The Crown Office said a hearing took place in his absence.
He missed the original scheduled hearing on Thursday following the assault on Wednesday evening. A 21-year-old inmate has been charged over the assault on Mr Tobin.

A spokesman said: "Peter Tobin has now been fully committed for trial on a charge of murdering Vicky Hamilton.
"No further court dates have been scheduled as yet."

The eight-day deadline for Mr Tobin to attend the hearing expires on Friday. The accused once lived at the three-bedroom council house in Irvine Drive, Margate, where Vicky's body was found last week.
The Crown Office confirmed that he would not be appearing and that the hearing would go ahead without his attendance. Vicky, from Redding near Falkirk, was last seen at a bus stop in Bathgate's George Square, just after 1735 GMT on 10 February 1991.
Mr Tobin once lived at the three-bedroom council house in Irvine Drive, Margate, where the bodies of Vicky and Dinah McNicol, 18, from Essex, were found last week. Police also found the body of Dinah McNicol, 18, from Essex, in the Margate house.
Vicky was last seen at a bus stop in Bathgate's George Square, just after 1735 GMT on 10 February, 1991. Mr Tobin is expected to face a trial for Vicky's murder at the High Court some time next year.
