At least one dead as overpass collapses in Brazilian World Cup host city Belo Horizonte At least two dead as overpass collapses in Brazilian World Cup host city Belo Horizonte
(about 1 hour later)
An overpass has collapsed in a Brazilian World Cup host city, killing at least one person and trapping a commuter bus, two construction trucks and one car. At least two people were killed and 19 injured when a concrete flyover in the World Cup host city of Belo Horizonte collapsed on to a bus and other vehicles.
The incident took place on main avenue, the expansion of which was part of the World Cup infrastructure plan. The incident took place on a road that was expanded as part of the World Cup infrastructure plan.
A woman who was driving a commuter bus trapped by the overpass died, said Captain Federico Pascual of the Belo Horizonte fire department. The driver of the commuter bus, said to be a woman in her 20s, was among the dead, according to local media. Two trucks and a car were also hit by the structure.
The overpass collapsed about three miles from the Mineirao football stadium, which has hosted several World Cup matches in recent weeks and will see a semi-final match next Tuesday. Photographs of the scene showed the front of the yellow bus and what appeared to be a car crushed completely flat. Security camera footage showed there had been heavy traffic on the street below the overpass when it collapsed.
Mr Pascual said another 10 people were injured in the collapse, all construction workers. Witness Rogerio Alves said: “It was a scary business. I still don’t believe it… I was talking to my daughter when suddenly the viaduct fell at once.”
The overpass “arched over a really busy thoroughfare”, Mr Pascual said. The accident happened about three miles from the Mineirao stadium, where several World Cup games have been played, including Costa Rica against England.
He added that he feared there may be at least one more death, as “we still cannot get a look inside the car” that was trapped. It is due to host one of the semi-final matches next week.
