(about 2 hours later)
Police say seven people have been shot and injured in Indianapolis in the central United States. Seven people were shot and injured early Saturday morning in an Indianapolis neighborhood, police said.
Police said multiple gunshots were heard early Saturday in the city's Broad Ripple neighborhood. One man is in critical condition at a local hospital, and five other men and a woman were shot but did not have life-threatening injuries. An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer heard multiple gunshots at 2.23am Saturday in the city's Broad Ripple neighborhood, police spokesman Lt Christopher Bailey said in a news release.
There were no arrests immediately and the motive for the shooting was unknown. One man is in critical condition at a local hospital, Bailey said. Five other men and a woman also were shot, but do not have life-threatening injuries.
Police spokesman Lt Christopher Bailey says there were many people on the street at the time. He added, "someone opens fire in a crowd like that, we're lucky more weren't hurt." "I've been told there were quite a few people out ... on a typical Friday night, bouncing from bar to bar. Someone opens fire in a crowd like that, we're lucky more weren't hurt," Bailey said at a news conference early Saturday morning.
More details soon ... No one has been arrested in the shooting and a motive isn't known, Bailey said. Police are interviewing the victims and investigating the scene.
Broad Ripple is a neighborhood about eight miles (13km) north of downtown Indianapolis that has numerous bars and restaurants.
