The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said on Twitter that gunfire had been heard at Hindi trading centre. The BBC's Dennis Okari in Nairobi says houses have been set alight in Hindi, near Mpeketoni, and a police station has been attacked at Gamba.
Hindi is about 15km (nine miles) Lamu and close to the town of Mpeketoni, which was nearly destroyed in one of the attacks last month. The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said on Twitter that police were responding to the incidents.
The Kenya Red Cross said no casualties had been reported so far. Mpeketoni was nearly destroyed in one of the attacks last month.
"Local authorities are responding with police assistance," Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre tweeted. It is not clear who is responsible for the shooting, but the militant Islamist group al-Shabab has mounted a number of attacks in the region.
