Netanyahu pledges justice for murder of Palestinian teen Hamas says Israeli air strike kills Gaza militants
(about 3 hours later)
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to bring to justice the killers of a Palestinian teenager whose death has sparked days of rioting. The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas says six of its fighters have died in an Israeli air strike on the Gaza strip.
He was speaking after Israeli police arrested six Jewish suspects over the killing of Mohammed Abu Khdair in Jerusalem on Wednesday. If confirmed it would be the deadliest attack on the group since an eight-day conflict with Israel in 2012.
Police believe there was a nationalist motive to the killing, which followed the murder of three Israeli teenagers. Two more militants died earlier in Israeli air strikes in response to at least 20 rocket attacks from Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip have killed six people. Tensions in the region are high following the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdair.
One strike on Sunday evening - reportedly from a drone - left two people dead and came at the end of a day that saw at least 20 rockets fired from Gaza into Israel. Police believe there was a nationalist motive to his killing, which followed the murder of three Israeli teenagers. Israeli police have arrested six Jewish suspects.
Two later Israeli strikes on Gaza left another four people dead. All six were described as Hamas militants, in what the movement called the biggest single hit against the Islamist group since 2012. Emergency services in Gaza have confirmed only two deaths from the air strike in the southern town of Rafah but four others are believed to be buried under the collapsed site.
Anger and grief Earlier, two other Palestinian militants were killed in a separate air attack near a refugee camp in central Gaza.
The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to rocket attacks against southern Israel and targeted "terror" sites and concealed rocket launchers.
