Roger Pope, Principal at Kingsbridge Community College, said the pupil, a former Plymouth Argyle youth player, was a "much loved and popular member" of the school.
"He was sparky and lively, with a great sense of humour," he said.
"He was a talented footballer and loved sport. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time."
He said the atmosphere at the school was "very sombre" and counsellors were available to talk to students.
