Sydney mall stabbing: man charged with murder over Westfield death Sydney mall stabbing: man charged with murder over Westfield death
(about 1 hour later)
A man will face court after another man was stabbed to death in front of shoppers in a horrific scene in a major western Sydney shopping centre. A man accused of stabbing another man to death in front of horrified shoppers at a Sydney shopping centre will defend his murder charge, his lawyer says.
The 35-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a 40-year-old man inside the Westfield mall in Parramatta on Monday morning. Kazem Mohamadi Payam, 35, appeared in Parramatta local court on Tuesday morning.
It is believed an argument over a girlfriend triggered the killing. Shoppers, including families and children enjoying school holidays, were at Parramatta's Westfield shopping centre when the stabbing occurred on Monday.
Horrified onlookers watched as the man allegedly repeatedly stabbed the other man to death, leaving the knife lodged in the victim's chest. Emergency services arrived to find the body of the man, named in court papers as 40-year-old Nabil Naser, inside the shopping centre with multiple stab wounds.
The man was charged after being questioned by police for more than 12 hours. Payam did not apply for bail on Tuesday and it was formally refused.
Refused bail, he is to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday. The matter was adjourned to 24 July.
Outside court his lawyer, Georgina Namat, said Payam would defend the charges.
“We are not applying for bail today but we will be applying for bail soon,” she said. “We will be defending the charges.”
A crying female supporter walked out of court after Payam's appearance.
