Russia launched the Angara rocket, its first new design of space rocket since the Soviet era, on Wednesday from the northern military space port of Plesetsk, aiming to break its reliance on foreign suppliers and the launching pad it leases from Kazakhstan. The rocket’s quiet debut contrasted sharply with the live broadcast of its aborted first attempt last month, a failure that the engine designer, Energomash, attributed to a drop in pressure of the liquid oxygen tank.
