All white now: does the new Hunger Games trailer whet your appetite?

Version 0 of 1.

Do not adjust your sets or stop your ears. The teaser for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is very white and full of wisdom; a propaganda broadcast promising "prosperity" and "solidarity" for upstanding citizens and a terrible punishment for those that stray. Viewers who have yet to pre-order their tickets have presumably already been taken outside and shot.

The authorities can rest easy. We like this mordant, minimalist trailer as much for the things it doesn't show as the things that it does. The next Hunger Games movie features Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and apparently focuses on a revolutionary battle to take back the land of Panem. But you'd never know it from this; the insurgents have been airbrushed clean out of the picture, at least until the moment when the transmission breaks. Instead, we have President Snow (Donald Sutherland) sonorously assuring us that all is right in the world.

"Panen today, Panem tomorrow, Panem for ever," he vows – and this theme of a benign, ongoing dictatorship appears to have been adopted by the film-makers as well. The final chapter in the Hunger Games franchise has been shrewdly broken into a pair of standalone films. Part one is out in November, part two in time for Christmas 2015. Then and only then will the reign of terror be at an end.
