Actress Sheridan Smith gets honorary University of Hull degree

Actress Sheridan Smith has received an honorary degree from the University of Hull.

The 33-year-old, from Epworth in Lincolnshire, became "an honorary doctor of the university" earlier.

Sheridan Smith appeared in ITV comedy Dark Ages in 1999, followed by The Royle Family, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Benidorm.

She has won TV and theatre awards and later this year is due to star in an ITV biopic about Cilla Black.

Also awarded honorary degrees from the University of Hull were:

University of Hull vice chancellor Professor Calie Pistorius said all nine had a connection with the region.
