Stephen Crabb MP is being widely tipped for the Welsh secretary job after the serving minister David Jones was sacked. Stephen Crabb MP has been appointed as Welsh secretary, after the serving minister David Jones was sacked.
The Clwyd West MP was shown the door by Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday as part of a cabinet reshuffle. The Preseli Pembrokeshire MP was the deputy Wales minister, but was promoted following a meeting at 10 Downing Street.
Mr Jones said he fully understood the decision and was not unhappy, adding: "The prime minister has my total support." Confirming his new role, he said he was "very pleased" and would be "working hard for Wales".
Mr Crabb arrived at Downing Street shortly after 10:00 BST. Clwyd West MP Mr Jones was sacked by Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
The Preseli Pembrokeshire MP is currently the deputy Wales minister. Mr Jones said he was not unhappy, adding: "The prime minister has my total support."
Monmouthshire MP David Davies tweeted he was sorry to hear Mr Jones had gone but said: "He did a superb job but so will Stephen Crabb who takes his place." Shortly after leaving Downing Street Mr Crabb - who had been widely tipped to replace Mr Jones - paid tribute to his predecessor.
He tweeted: "I will build on the excellent work of David Jones. He achieved so much during his time as Welsh Secretary & leaves a strong legacy to Wales."
In further tweets, he said: "Wales deserves the best and I look forward to providing a strong voice for Wales around the Cabinet table."
'Shrewd'
He said it was a "huge privilege" to join the cabinet.
Mr Crabb added: "This Gov is ambitious for Wales, working to ensure Wales at front of the economic recovery".

About Stephen Crabb
Stephen Crabb was was first elected as Preseli Pembrokeshire in 2005 and was re-elected in 2010. He is also a government whip and was David Jones's deputy.
Raised by a single parent in a council house, he grew up in Haverfordwest and attended the town's Tasker Milward School.
A father-of-two, he is married to Beatrice.
His website says his hobbies include rugby, mountain biking, tennis, cooking, playing the guitar and learning French.
Before his election, he worked as a marketing consultant. He also worked for the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
