At 10:00 Avon and Somerset Police said work to recover one of the lorries was about to start. At 13:25 one lane reopened southbound but the Highways Agency said lanes one and two remain closed for recovery and clean-up work.
Ch Insp Rhys Hughes said motorists heading south are being diverted at junction 24 for Bridgwater and Minehead. "Long delays remain in the area and road users are advised to allow extra time or delay their journey where possible," an agency spokesman said.
He said: "[Police} continue to advise motorists to seek alternative routes and avoid the area wherever possible. "Road users are also advised to take sufficient water with them as high temperatures are forecast in the region," he added.
