A man has been airlifted to hospital after his legs were crushed in farm machinery in Cornwall.

Firefighters said the man was working on a potato harvester at Paul, near Penzance, when his legs became trapped.

Three fire crews were called to the scene at about 10:15 BST and set up a platform beside the machine to release him, Cornwall Fire Service said.

A police spokesman said the 45-year-old was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with life-changing injuries.

Devon and Cornwall Police said he sustained several crush injuries to his legs and was due to undergo surgery.

The harvesters lift potatoes from the ground before sieving off loose soil.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
