An Australian weightlifter who won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games has been held by police following an assault on a Welsh weightlifter. An Australian weightlifter has admitted assaulting a member of the Welsh team at the Commonwealth Games.
Francois Etoundi, 29, is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff court. Francois Etoundi, 29, head-butted Welsh weightlifter Gareth Evans, 28, breaking his nose, at the athletes' village at 05:30 on Wednesday.
The alleged assault on Gareth Evans is said to have taken place at the athletes' village in Glasgow at about 06:00 on Wednesday. At Glasgow Sheriff Court, he was ordered to pay Mr Evans £400.
A Team Wales spokesman said: "We're aware of an incident that occurred involving a member of Team Wales." Etoundi won a bronze medal in the weightlifting 77kg category on Sunday. It appears the problem arose after Mr Evans' girlfriend hugged him.
Sheriff Andrew Cubie said Etoundi had chosen to bring the law of the playground to the Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, a Team Wales spokesman said: "We're aware of an incident that occurred involving a member of Team Wales."
