Three homes have been destroyed in bushfires in northern New South Wales in an ominous sign in the leadup to the official start of the bushfire season.

The rural fire service said 27 fires were burning in the Clarence valley area with 100 firefighters trying to contain them. The three homes were burnt down near Kremnos, south of Grafton.

Firefighters spent the weekend working to control the blazes with thousands of hectares of land burnt, and were being assisted by 11 aircraft and heavy machinery, said an RFS spokesman, Matt Sun.

With winds easing, firefighters were trying to take advantage of the calmer conditions. There were 75 fires burning around NSW in total, 25 of them uncontained.

“This is a larger than usual number of fires for this time of year,” Sun said.
