Matthew Macklin’s fight postponed after trainer Jamie Moore shot in Spain
Version 0 of 1. Matthew Macklin’s fight with Jorge Sebastian Heiland, a WBC middleweight title eliminator that was due to take place in Dublin on 30 August, has been postponed after the Irish boxer’s trainer, Jamie Moore, was shot in the legs in Spain on Saturday night. “I am disappointed to have to postpone my fight but in the light of the circumstances and the disruption to my preparation it is the right thing to do,” said Macklin. “Every fight at this stage in my career is of huge importance and being 100% for the night is vital. “We will make an announcement shortly on a new date and I look forward to fighting in Dublin in 2014,” the boxer, who was looking to secure a fourth world title chance, concluded. As a result of Macklin’s withdrawal from the card, the organisers Matchroom have said that the entire show will be postponed until later in the year. Moore, who won the European light-middleweight title in 2009 and had worked as a television pundit before moving into training, was appointed to Macklin to work at his gym in Marbella. He is understood to still be in hospital after reportedly being shot at five times and hit twice, in the leg and hip, over the weekend. He tweeted: “Overwhelmed. Gutted and confused about what happened, but thank God I’m OK”. Thanks for all the well wishes. Overwhelmed. Gutted and confused about what happened, but thank God I'm ok. X The pair had met in the ring as fighters in 2006, a bout Moore won by a knockout. |
