The deputy leader of the Scottish Conservatives said the Scottish Labour leader had no future. In a statement, Ms Alexander said: "I offered myself to lead Labour in the Scottish Parliament in the autumn because I believed and continue to believe I have a contribution to make to improve the lives of my fellow Scots."
'Lame duck'
Murdo Fraser told BBC Radio Scotland: "What is absolutely clear today is that Wendy Alexander is now a lame duck leader for Scottish Labour.
"If she carries on as Labour leader for much longer, all we will get day by day is more revelations, leading up to a possible police inquiry following the Electoral Commission report.
"It is very difficult to see how, in the long term, Wendy Alexander can carry on as Labour leader and have credibility."
Mark Hirst, a parliamentary researcher for the SNP, has asked Strathclyde Police to investigate.
Strathclyde Police said: "We can confirm we have received an e-mail and the matter will be looked into."
The SNP MSP, Alex Neil, said that may be the way forward: "After the allegations in today's newspapers it is inevitable there will be a police investigation.
"I think it is better to come from the Electoral Commission but, if necessary, then I think the police have to step in even without the Electoral Commission because the allegations now are very serious."
