The route starts in east London and takes in the Surrey hills before ending outside Buckingham Palace. The race has been cut from 100 to 86 miles, after warnings of heavy rain from the tail end of Hurricane Bertha.
But conditions could be poor with the Met Office issuing warnings as the tail end of Hurricane Bertha hits the UK. The route, which starts in East London, will now miss out a section covering Leith Hill and Box Hill in Surrey.
Before the elite riders race, about 22,000 amateur cyclists will tackle the course which takes in some of the climbs featured in the London 2012 Olympics. It will end outside Buckingham Palace.
But with wet and windy weather forecast, the event's organisers have said the ride may be shortened by removing both Leith Hill and Box Hill from the route for rider safety. Event director Hugh Brasher said the safety of the cyclists was the most important consideration.
"This decision has been made in the light of detailed information from the Met Office and with full agreement of local authorities and other agencies," he said.
