The A.P. journalist, Simone Camilli, 35, died Wednesday when Gaza police engineers were attempting to disable the ordnance in the Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, the news agency reported.
The dead also included the head of the bomb squad, identified as Taysir Al Houm, the ministry said. Three Gaza police officers were also killed.
Mr. Camilli, an Italian citizen, and a translator, Ali Shehda Abu Afash, were on assignment with the ordnance team when the explosion occurred, The A.P. reported. The police said four others were seriously injured, including the A.P. photographer Hatem Moussa.
Mr. Camilli, who had been with The A.P. since 2005, is the first foreign journalist killed in the Gaza conflict, the news agency said.
