Teen daughter and boyfriend arrested after body of American woman found stuffed in suitcase in Bali

Version 0 of 1. The body of a vacationing American woman was found battered and stuffed in a suitcase at a Bali, Indonesia, resort Tuesday, authorities said. The remains of Sheila von Wiese Mack, 62, were found outside of the St. Regis Bali Resort in a blood-splattered suitcase that had been put in the trunk of a taxi and abandoned, according to reports. Police have arrested von Wiese Mack’s daughter, Heather Lois Mack, 19, and Mack’s boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, who are suspected of killing the woman then fleeing to another hotel in the area, where they were later found. According to police, von Wiese Mack’s body was half-clothed, wrapped in a bloody hotel bed sheet and tied up with duct tape. “The victim was found dead with a severe head wound,” Djoko Hari Utomo, the Denpasar police chief, told the Jakarta Globe. Schaefer was spotted by closed-circuit surveillance video arguing with von Wiese Mack in the hotel’s lobby on Monday, according to Agence France-Presse. On Tuesday, Schaefer and Mack checked out of the hotel, called a taxi and brought down several suitcases, allegedly including the one containing von Wiese Mack’s body, the police chief told reporters. They never returned to the taxi. The driver went into the hotel to report the missing patrons, and when he and the manager opened the trunk, they discovered the bloody suitcase and reported it to the police, the Associated Press reported. Police searched for the couple, who had fled the hotel by way of a beach behind the resort. They were found sleeping at a hotel in Legian, about six miles from the St. Regis hotel, according to the Jakarta Globe. According to the AP, the couple told police that they had been taken captive by an armed gang who killed von Wiese Mack, but that they escaped. The victim reportedly recently lived in a Chicago suburb and was the widow of well-known Chicago composer and producer James Mack, who died of a pulmonary embolism in 2006 while on vacation in Greece.
