Manchester United have released Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard from his contract, according to media reports. Anders Lindegaard is actively looking for a new club following “constructive dialogue” between Manchester United and the No2 goalkeeper – although he could yet stay at Old Trafford beyond 1 September, according to his agent, who also denied he has been released.
Sunnmorsposten, a newspaper based in Alesund where Lindegaard played for Aalesund FK before joining United in 2010, reported that the player had been let go by the Premier League club and that his agent, Michael Stensgaard, would be making a statement later on Wednesday. Lindegaard has found his first-team opportunities limited. Last season he made only three appearances, with the Dane having been permanently demoted to being David De Gea’s backup since a 4-3 win over Reading in December 2012 that effectively ended the chance handed to him by Sir Alex Ferguson to claim the No1 jersey for himself.
“Spread your wings and fly #mufc #fly #manchesterunited,” tweeted the 30-year-old Lindegaard, seemingly confirming his imminent exit from Old Trafford, where he battled with Spain’s David de Gea for the position of first-choice keeper. Michael Stensgaard, his agent, told the Guardian: “We’ve had a very good dialogue with Man United and we talked about the prospect of [Anders] getting the chance to play and, obviously with De Gea [there], the prospect that Anders should go out and find a club where he should play. We sort of agreed that we could look into opportunities. So it’s not that United are kicking him out or anything, its a very constructive dialogue on how the future should look. Then in good co-operation we agreed that we would look into the opportunities.
He made 29 first-team appearances. “The most important thing is that it’s the right thing for Anders and the right thing for the club as well – that’s very important.”
Asked about reports that Lindegaard had been released, Stensgaard said: “No. It has absolutely nothing to do with the truth. We’ve had a very good dialogue. If the case is that we do not find the right club both for Anders and for Man United – because this is very important – then Anders will stay and he’ll have his heart at the club. He’s a lifelong Man United fan and he’s very loyal to the club.”
Stensgaard would not be drawn on whether his client has so far had any offers from another club. “No, we keep that [to ourselves] internally.”
