The theft at St Aidan's Church, Bamburgh, was discovered on Friday but could have happened as long ago as 26 April, police said. The stolen items were a 17th Century "lobster pot" helmet, similar to armour worn by anti-royalist Roundheads during the English Civil War, and a pair of gauntlets. They had been in the church for more than 400 years. The thieves climbed up old carvings behind the altar to take the items, a Northumbria Police spokeswoman said. |
