Version 0 of 1.

Yes, he’s done it again. King of the one-liners Tim Vine has been awarded the coveted prize for funniest joke at the Edinburgh festival. Make sure you’re sitting down before you read his winning gag. We don’t want to be responsible for any seizures. OK, are you ready?

“I’ve decided to sell my Hoover … well, it was just collecting dust.”

What do you mean, it’s not that funny? Mixed reactions on the comment desk, but I thought it was pretty good. Even better in my view was the one that came third: Mark Watson’s “Always leave them wanting more, my uncle used to say to me. Which is why he lost his job in disaster relief.” That’s a real joke, whereas Vine’s is really just a here today, gone tomorrow pun, and we can all do those.

It may be the nature of online polls that puns win out over proper jokes. Hence second place going to Masai Graham’s “I’ve written a joke about a fat badger, but I couldn’t fit it into my set.” Yawn-inducing.

I also liked Ria Lina’s “I wanted to do a show about feminism. But my husband wouldn’t let me.” A semblance of political comedy. Hurrah! The rest of the top 10 was truly terrible. There was a parallel poll of the worst jokes at the festival, though I have to say I couldn’t see much difference between these and about half the jokes in the winners’ list.

Anyway, we know you can do better. So cue lights, let’s have some hush from the audience, no heckling please, the stage is yours, Guardian funsters. Tell us your favourite joke, and make it snappy – and reasonably clean please.
