Northampton man who intervened in town centre brawl dies

A 61-year-old man who received serious head injuries after trying to break up a fight in Northampton town centre has died in hospital.

George Wedderburn, of Byfield Road, St James, intervened in a brawl near Steffans jewellers in Abington Square, during the early hours of 17 August.

Police said he died on Saturday.

A 22-year-old man from Kingsthorpe Hollow has already appeared before magistrates charged with assault. He will next attend court on 3 September.

Officers are keen to trace another man as part of their enquiries. He is described as a tall, white man in his early 20s, who had a small beard and wore a blue T-shirt and glasses.
