A British national has died in Thailand, the Foreign Office has said. He has been named as Jason Flannery, 25, from Richmond, north Yorkshire.

He died on Saturday after colliding with a glass door or window, which shattered and severed one of his arteries, according to reports.

Thai media have suggested that there was an argument in the flat in which Flannery, a talented athlete, died. Thai police said they found him dead when they arrived at the apartment.

His girlfriend, Janjira Buapae, said she returned from work to find him in discussion with a friend. According to Thai media, she told police she left the flat after he tried to attack her. Thai police have sent Flannery's body for autopsy.

According to the Northern Echo, Flannery won the Yorkshire County AAA 1500m title as a teenager, as well as the Cleveland Challenge Cup. The newspaper reported that he was also awarded the John Bowles Cup by his school for outstanding achievement in sport.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Pattaya, Thailand, on 23 August. We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time."
