Ch Supt Alun Thomas from South Wales Police, the Silver Commander responsible for the operational delivery of the Nato summit, said they were looking after an "unprecedented international global event".
He said the force has dealt with six FA Cup finals, rugby World Cup matches, major concerts and international events, and was used to handling international media and international world leaders.
But he added: "It is fair to say that this is totally unprecedented and something that the UK has never managed before so whilst it's challenging for us locally in Wales, what an opportunity, what a fantastic chance for us to display Wales across the globe and show the rest of our partners and colleagues that we are capable of delivering this on behalf of Wales."

Chief of staff Jason Thomas said: "It's an extremely major operation - we have been working on it for close to a year.
"We've split our whole operation in two for the duration of the Nato summit.
"We've built a temporary terminal near the British Airways site, essentially duplicating the existing terminal, ready to welcome the delegates.
"We're still running our day-to-day operations - for passengers it will be business as usual."
"We are genuinely really excited - it provides an opportunity for us to give Nato delegates a warm welcome to Wales, and an opportunity to showcase what we've done in the last 18 months to transform the airport."
Mr Thomas said people should allow more time for their journeys to and from the airport in case of road congestion, with a limited number of restrictions.
Chief Superintendent Joe Ruddy of South Wales Police said: "Although a variety of summit attendees will start to arrive from Tuesday, we are working to reduce any significant traffic disruption within the road network around Cardiff International and access routes to airport."
