http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/04/world/americas/guatemala-prisoner-faces-new-charges.html Version 0 of 1. Byron Lima, a former army captain serving time in the killing of a Roman Catholic bishop, has been charged with money laundering and organized crime related to an illicit multimillion-dollar prison empire. The director of the national prison system, Sergio Camargo, has also been charged and is suspected of taking money from Mr. Lima, who would have been eligible for parole next week. Bishop Juan Gerardi Conedera, 75, was bludgeoned with a concrete block in 1998, two days after he presented a report blaming the military for most of the 200,000 deaths in Guatemala’s 1960-96 civil war. |
