Jet2 plane makes emergency landing at East Midlands Airport Jet2 passengers escaped along wing after emergency landing
(about 2 hours later)
A plane full of holidaymakers returning from Ibiza made an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport when smoke filled the cabin. Passengers on a plane that was forced into an emergency landing have described how they forced open a door and jumped from the wing.
Some passengers climbed out on to the wing of the Jet2 plane after it landed at about 21:10 BST on Wednesday, witnesses said. Jet2 said the flight, which landed at East Midlands Airport at 21:10 BST on Wednesday, had a "minor electrical fault".
Malcolm Yates, from Lincolnshire, said there was a "strong electrical burning smell" and people were screaming. A passenger on the Ibiza flight said there was a "strong... burning smell".
Jet2 said the plane had a "minor electrical problem". Another man said cabin crew lost control on the ground, which led to panic and people trying to escape.
An airport spokesman said flights had been suspended for about 15 minutes and full safety procedures were followed. The jet can carry up to 150 passengers. 'Great big lunge'
Mr Yates said the intercom failed and there was no communication between cabin staff and passengers. An airport spokesman said three other flights were diverted to Birmingham and full safety procedures were followed. The Boeing 733 jet can carry up to 150 passengers.
"When we did come into land, it was quite erratic," he said. Kyle Charles, from Strelley Village, Nottinghamshire, said: "We circled above the airport and tried but failed to land.
"We soon saw the fire engines lined up. The lights were all out. Then the doors didn't open. People started to panic. "We landed on the second attempt. When we landed it turned into sheer carnage."
"You could smell the burning, a strong electrical burning smell. That's when people started to panic, screaming 'get the kids off!'" Mr Charles said one member of the cabin crew kept screaming over and over: "Get off the plane everybody now!"
He said some passengers left the plane by yellow chutes. He said the crew opened the main doors at the back and front of the plane, where the inflatable chutes drop down, but not the ones over the wings.
A woman claimed her son managed to break a door and get out on to the wing of the plane. His friend Rob forced one of the doors open, ran to the end of the wing and jumped down on to the tarmac.
Diane, who did not give her surname, told BBC Radio WM: "There were lots of fire engines and ambulances on the tarmac waiting for it to land. He then helped other passengers who were running along the wings down on to the runway.
"Greg [son] said to Julie [his partner] 'we are in trouble' and he said the smell of fire was just dreadful. Malcom Yates, who was also on the flight, said the intercom failed and there was no communication between cabin staff and passengers in the air.
"It was chaos, everyone was running and screaming." "We soon saw the fire engines lined up," he said.
A Jet2 spokesperson said: "Following a safe arrival last night at East Midlands Airport, flight LS644 from Ibiza had to be evacuated once on stand as a precautionary safety measure, due to a minor electrical problem which led to some smoke in the cabin. "You could smell the burning, a strong electrical burning smell. That's when people started to panic, screaming 'get the kids off!'
"All passengers were looked after by our airport team. A full investigation is now under way." "The stewardess kicked the door down up the front. I remember her taking a great big lunge for it to smash it down."
On Twitter Maxine Sheppard described how they had been diverted to Birmingham, while Angela Garrod witnessed a plane circling above East Midlands Airport. A Jet2 spokesperson said: "Following a safe arrival at East Midlands Airport of flight LS644 we decided to disembark passengers as quickly as possible as a precautionary safety measure because a minor electrical problem led to some smoke in the cabin.
"All passengers were looked after by our airport team and a full investigation is now under way. The safety of our passengers is of paramount importance."
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch tweeted that it had deployed a team to investigate what happened.
