Version 0 of 1.

Never before seen photographs of Barbra Streisand, captured during her earliest years in Hollywood, are to be published in a new book.

Barbra: Streisand's Early Years in Hollywood, 1968-1976 features more than 240 images taken by the US photojournalists Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller, both of whom were commissioned to work with Streisand after she arrived in Hollywood. Only 1,000 copies of the collector's edition, costing $750 (£455) each, are being printed. For dedicated fans with even deeper pockets, there are two "art editions" which are limited to 100 copies at $1,800 each.

One set of art edition books features a print signed by Schapiro from his cover shoot with Streisand for the November 1972 issue of Harper's Bazaar. The other edition features a signed photograph taken by Schiller during Streisand's filming of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. Schapiro and Schiller tell the stories behind the photographs, more than half of which have never been published before.

The book, available only through the publisher Taschen from November, covers her life from Funny Girl in 1968 to A Star Is Born in 1976. "Through it all a picture emerges not of a singer who could act, but of an actress who could sing, write, direct, dance and do just about anything she put her mind to," said Taschen.

Schapiro worked on more than 200 films in Hollywood, including Midnight Cowboy and Taxi Driver. Schiller is a photographer, a film producer, director and screenwriter, whose collaborations include Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song.

For Streisand fans who can't afford the high price, there may be hope. If Taschen follows form of other collectors' editions, a standard version of the book may be available in the future, though no plans are yet announced.
