Toronto Mayor Called to Testify in Canada Toronto Mayor Called to Testify in Canada
(about 1 hour later)
Rob Ford, the mayor of Toronto, told reporters on Friday that he had been subpoenaed to testify at a court hearing related to efforts by his unofficial driver to recover a video showing the mayor smoking crack cocaine. The driver, Alexander Lisi, was charged with extortion in connection with his efforts to recover the video, which apparently was made by drug dealers. Mr. Ford, who is campaigning for re-election, declined to answer questions about why he had been called as a witness. The Toronto police also declined to comment. Mr. Ford will be required to appear next spring at a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to send Mr. Lisi’s case to trial. Mr. Ford has confessed to smoking crack and to bouts of out-of-control drinking. The election is next month.
