Fatal Rozelle explosion: police interview convenience store owner
Version 0 of 1. Police have interviewed the owner of the convenience store at the centre of an inferno in Sydney’s inner west that killed three people, including a mother and her baby. Adeel Khan has been in serious condition in Royal Prince Alfred hospital since emergency services dug him out of the debris in Rozelle in the early hours of last Thursday. Detectives went to the hospital at the weekend to speak with the Bankstown 44-year-old. On Friday police said Khan was not being treated as a suspect. They are continuing their investigations into the explosion and fire that destroyed the store and adjoining units, killing Bianka O’Brien, 31, her baby boy Jude, and a neighbour, Chris Noble, 27. Most residents in the grieving community will be allowed to return to their homes after an exclusion zone was reduced on Monday. Police say a report shows it is safe for residents to return. “The results of the clearance inspection, air monitoring, settled dust and soil sampling indicate the area does not pose a risk to health and safety from exposure to asbestos and can be reoccupied,” police said in a statement. Part of Darling Street will remain closed to vehicles between Victoria Road and Beattie Street. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, with Strike Force Baracchi launched to investigate the fire. Reports of a silver car fleeing the area after the explosion are being investigated. On Sunday, O’Brien’s husband, John, issued a statement describing his wife as “an inspiration to all who knew her”. “She was loyal, caring and absolutely loved life.” Jude was just discovering the world around him, O’Brien said. “He was a perfect baby and never stopped smiling,” he said. |
