Mark Cavendish cleared to continue in Tour of Britain after Sunday crash

Mark Cavendish has been cleared to take part in the second stage of the Tour of Britain on Monday morning despite crashing in Sunday’s opening stage.

The Manxman collided with the Rapha Condor-JLT team car and mechanic before picking himself up and eventually finishing third behind Marcel Kittel. He had been expected to go to hospital after suffering a leg injury but Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s directeur sportif Brian Holm has confirmed that Cavendish has been cleared to continue.

“The doctor said it wasn’t really necessary to go to the hospital,” he told cyclingweekly.co.uk

“He hurt his leg hitting the mechanic and car. He’s got some bruising, it’s quite swollen on his upper thigh, it’s like a rock. He hit the person at 50kph. He’s feeling better than yesterday. He was hurt, but he’s fine. He’s going to start and we’ll see how it goes. The injuries are affecting him if he finishes second, but if he’s winning he’s fine.”
