Chile: Bombing in Santiago Wounds at Least 14 People | |
(35 minutes later) | |
A bomb exploded in a subway station in Santiago, the capital, on Monday, wounding at least 14 people. The blast took place at lunchtime at a fast-food restaurant in a small, underground shopping mall connected to the Escuela Militar subway station in Santiago’s affluent Las Conde neighborhood. The Fire Department commander, Ivo Zuvic García, said the injuries were apparently caused by fragments from a fire extinguisher filled with gunpowder that detonated in a trash bin. Monday’s bomb was the most damaging of at least 29 planted around Santiago this year. Some have not exploded, and none of the others caused any injuries. In many cases, anarchist groups have claimed responsibility, demanding freedom for two anarchists imprisoned in Spain. No one has claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack. The latest blast occurred near the country’s top military academy, three days before the 41st anniversary of the coup that ousted President Salvador Allende and began the brutal dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. |
