A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his father.

Peter McDermott is accused of killing 65-year-old Bernard McDermott at a flat in Lynedoch Street, Greenock, Inverclyde, on 23 April.

The 41-year-old is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed his father on the head, neck and body.

His QC Mark Stewart did not enter a plea during a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow. Judge Lord Bracadale continued the case until a later date.

Mr McDermott is also accused of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The charge includes claims that he hid a bloodstained knife and washed blood from his hands.

He is also accused of having a knife in a public place and a separate charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
