Two men have appeared in court in Brisbane charged with terrorism-related offences after a series of police raids.

Omar Succarieh, 31, from Brisbane, who is believed to be the brother of a suspected Syria suicide bomber from Australia, and Agim Kruezi, 21, from Logan, faced Brisbane magistrates court on Thursday.

Neither applied for bail and their cases were adjourned to 17 October.

Both face charges of preparing for incursions into Syria to engage in hostile activities. They were arrested during a series of police raids on Wednesday.

Kruezi, 21, is also charged with recruiting people for incursions into Syria and weapons-related offences.

Succarieh, 31, is accused of funding the terrorist organisation Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria.

Both men were remanded in custody.

“At this stage my clients have instructed me not to make any comment,” Rogers told reporters outside court. “Their matters have been adjourned to the 17th of October and we’re in the process of taking instructions from them.”

A crossbow and a firearm were among items seized by Australian federal police and Queensland police officers during nine raids in Brisbane and Logan on Wednesday.

The iQraa Islamic Centre in the Logan suburb of Underwood, which has come under fire for promoting extremist views, was among the premises searched after a year-long AFP investigation.

Police say the men weren’t planning terrorist attacks in Australia but a decision was made to raid the properties in the interest of public safety after weapons were found.
