The Simpsons to battle their earlier selves in Halloween episode
Version 0 of 1. In their traditional annual Treehouse of Horror episode this Halloween, the Simpsons are set to meet their most terrifying antagonists yet: themselves, from the 80s. In a parody of horror film The Others, the cartoon family find themselves haunted by a ghostly family. This turns out to be their crudely drawn earlier incarnations, who began life as an animated sketch on The Tracey Ullman Show. Once The Simpsons got their own show in 1989, the animation was whipped into shape. The Ullman versions became less crude and jagged, and were honed season-on-season to the crisp digitally-rendered versions we have today. The earlier family occasionally crop up again, though, notably in Guillermo Del Toro’s epic take on the show’s opening credits. The voices were also different in the earlier version, with Homer’s voice particularly deeper and dopier – for the Treehouse of Horror episode, the voice artists are going to perform the original family. Producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly that “we’ve [previously] implied that they were murdered and buried under the house, so this is expanding that thought. If people want a real Halloween bloodbath, they get it.” The current Simpsons family are also cropping up in unexpected places. They will appear in crossover episodes with Futurama, another show from animator Matt Groening, and also Family Guy, which also airs on Fox – with each show having viciously lampooned the other in the past. |
