Today brings some sad news today for fans of rail travel: several sleeper routes are being quietly phased out across Europe. Citing falling passenger numbers and competition from budget airlines, operators are ending night services that connect Paris to Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. | Today brings some sad news today for fans of rail travel: several sleeper routes are being quietly phased out across Europe. Trains from Berlin to Warsaw and Kiev, as well as the weekly Sibirjak service to Siberia, have also been withdrawn recently. The Paris to Madrid and Barcelona sleeper has already been discontinued, replaced with a high speed (but daytime) service. What can match the magic of being lulled to sleep by the rhythmic motion of the train, then waking up in an entirely new country, ready for what the day may bring?
