Homes have been evacuated in Greenock following an early morning fire in the town's Sinclair Street. More than 50 people have been told to stay away from their homes for 24 hours after a fire spread to a garage which housed an acetylene cylinder.
About 50 people had to be moved from their homes after the blaze involving several cars which were parked beside a commercial garage. Homes were evacuated following the fire at about 0145 GMT in Sinclair Street, Greenock. Householders were moved to a local community centre.
The fire began shortly before 0146 GMT on Monday. The blaze destroyed several cars and spread to the nearby garage.
The flames spread to the garage which contained an acetylene cylinder. Police cleared the area and local people were moved to a community centre. A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said crews controlled the fire and would remain at the site.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said they would be allowed to return once it was deemed safe to do so. He said: "A crew from Greenock fire station were immediately sent to the scene and on arrival discovered that several vehicles adjacent to a commercial garage were alight and the fire had spread to the building.

Firefighters used ground monitors and a water jet to tackle the fire from a safe distance. The cause of the fire was not known, he added.
The spokesman said crews have now controlled the blaze and will remain in attendance until all operations are complete.
The cause of the blaze will be determined by specialist fire investigation officers and Strathclyde Police, he added.
