By the end, Arsenal’s stadium had been engulfed in disappointment about the team’s lapses after those two goals from Jack Wilshere and, brilliantly, Alexis Sánchez had turned the game upside-down in the space of 11 second-half minutes. Yet they will also know it might have been worse on a day when both sides could reflect they might easily have won. | By the end, Arsenal’s stadium had been engulfed in disappointment about the team’s lapses after those two goals from Jack Wilshere and, brilliantly, Alexis Sánchez had turned the game upside-down in the space of 11 second-half minutes. Martin Demichelis’s header after 83 minutes spared Manchester City a second successive defeat but they still had time to hit the post twice during a wild and chaotic finale. Samir Nasri, facing his former club, was denied a stoppage-time winner because of an offside flag and City were also entitled to be aggrieved that the referee, Mark Clattenburg, did not award them a penalty in the final exchanges for Wilshere’s handball. | Martin Demichelis’s header after 83 minutes spared Manchester City a second successive defeat but they still had time to hit the post twice during a wild and chaotic finale. Arsenal limped towards the finish when, earlier in the game, they played as thought affronted by all those galling statistics about what happens when they come up against the teams they want to classify as bona fide rivals. Wenger and his players had been reminded all week about their sorry run of results against the leading opposition but there was absolutely no sense here of a side with an inferiority complex and they not only had to play with high skill but with considerable personality after all their early pressure was spoiled by a breakaway goal from Sergio Agüero. | Arsenal limped towards the finish when, earlier in the game, they played as thought affronted by all those galling statistics about what happens when they come up against the teams they want to classify as bona fide rivals. This, remember, is an Arsenal team that had taken only 26 points out of a possible 90 against the top teams over the last five years. For a good while, Arsenal found it difficult to get any momentum back. Vincent Kompany was a formidable opponent, as he always is in the big games, and David Silva’s nimble ability to create space in the gaps between midfield and attack frequently caused the home side issues. Yet, slowly but surely, Wenger’s team started to pin their opponents back again. | This, remember, is an Arsenal team that had taken only 26 points out of a possible 90 against the top teams over the last five years. Wilshere equalised in the 64th minute after running on to Aaron Ramsey’s pass, eluding Gaël Clichy and clipping a lovely shot above Joe Hart in the City goal. Then there was the finest moment yet of Sánchez’s brief time at Arsenal, with a majestic volley to give Arsenal the lead. It was just a pity for Arsenal that everything started to unravel from that point and Wenger must have been startled by the carelessness of his team. | |
It resulted in Demichelis thudding a header past Wojciech Szczesny straight from a corner and enough moments for Manuel Pellegrini to feel his team could have added an even more dramatic twist. | It resulted in Demichelis thudding a header past Wojciech Szczesny straight from a corner and enough moments for Manuel Pellegrini to feel his team could have added an even more dramatic twist. |
