Newcastle’s Jonás Gutiérrez reveals he has testicular cancer

The Newcastle United midfielder Jonás Gutiérrez has revealed he has testicular cancer. Gutiérrez, 31, is recovering at home in Argentina after having surgery.

In an interview with TyC Sports he said: “I detected a tumor in a testicle. When I confirmed the cancer, I went home crying.

“I came here and I assumed the costs despite having a contract with Newcastle. Money is not important. What is important is my health. I had to start chemotherapy.

“I had the operation in Argentina. I returned to England and Newcastle told me to leave.”

Gutiérrez spent the second half of last season on loan at Norwich and has not featured for Newcastle since last October.
