A driver who caused a crash that killed a 49-year-old woman and seriously injured her sister while at the wheel of a hired supercar has been jailed.

Saqib Hussain, 25, who was driving an Audi R8 Spyder at 76mph, crashed in a 30mph zone in Birmingham in August 2013, West Midlands Police said.

Hussain, of Acocks Green, hit a Ford Fiesta, killing passenger Noreen Ryan, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to six years.

A passenger in the Audi was also hurt in the collision in Shaftmoor Lane on 26 August.

Hussain, of Alexander Road, initially fled the scene but later handed himself into police.

He was also given a six-year driving ban at the hearing on Monday.

Hussain also admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without insurance.

Ms Ryan's sister Mary, the driver of the Fiesta, suffered from serious injuries to her back and pelvis, police said.

The force said in a victim personal statement read out at court, Noreen's other sister, Margaret, said: "We have lost a beautiful daughter, sister, aunty, stepmother and grandma.

"At a time when we should have been celebrating Noreen's 50th birthday, we were instead picking out her headstone. It is almost too much for the heart and soul to bear."

The sister said her 91-year-old mother had "lost her beautiful daughter who she brought into this world with love and joy and was taken in such a horrendous way".

She said: "We have seen our mother go through such grief when she should be enjoying her later years."
