South Korea: American Fails in Effort to Swim to North | South Korea: American Fails in Effort to Swim to North |
(about 3 hours later) | |
An American was arrested Tuesday night on a river that borders North Korea, the South Korean news media reported on Wednesday. The South Korean news agency Yonhap, quoting an anonymous government source, said that the American man had attempted to swim to North Korea. “All we can say at this point is that our border guards arrested an American man last night on the riverbank near the border,” said a Defense Ministry spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the inquiry was continuing. Yonhap said that the American, in his early 30s, had been found on the riverbank shortly before midnight. After he was apprehended, he told South Korean officials that he had intended to go to North Korea to meet its leader, Kim Jong-un, Yonhap reported. The United States Embassy said it was aware of the reports and had been “in touch with the appropriate South Korean authorities.” |
