Sky News presenter Kay Burley has apologised for calling a campaigner “a bit of a knob” on live TV after he tried to hit her cameraman with a stick. Burley was in Aberdeen on Wednesday in the lead-up to the referendum but was repeatedly heckled as she broadcast a series of live reports. At one point, unaware that her mic was live, she was clearly heard to call one campaigner “a bit of a knob”. She later took to Twitter to comment on her blunder. Burley claimed she made the remark after a yes campaigner tried “to hit” one of her cameramen with a stick. Soz for poor language - never alone with a microphone! Challenging environment ;-) ."DavieAdam no, someone who wanted to hit my cameraman with a stick. Not acceptable Felicity Perkins said: “Ha ha, Sky News Kay Burley calling someone a knob on live tv. Hilarious.” Mark Dunphy said: “Kay Burley just called a Yes supporter a knob on Sky News. We should hold judgement until the accused can prove he is not a knob £indyref” Katie Hughes said: “@KayBurley I have just watched u on tv saying there are one or two Yes campaigners here being a bit lairy? Man with balloons lol get real!!!” Lee McVeigh said: “Queen Kay Burley called a Yes supporter ‘a bit of a knob’ on Sky News.” The presenter apologised for her language which was caught just as she was going on air after being heckled by yes campaigners in the background. She said: “Soz for poor language - never alone with a microphone! Challenging environment ;-)” And she claimed the reason for her tongue slip was due to aggressive behaviour towards her television crew. She said in reply to a Twitter user who asked about the incident: “no, someone who wanted to hit my cameraman with a stick. Not acceptable.” • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email media@theguardian.com or phone 020 3353 3857. For all other inquiries please call the main Guardian switchboard on 020 3353 2000.
