Hike couture – the new trend in sports luxe Hike couture – the new trend in sports luxe

Much as we bristle at the thought of glamping, with its twee connotations and cop-out approach to sleeping outdoors, it has become an acceptable way to holiday in the countryside. Or indeed, survive a festival once you are past the age of 19. We recently went on a glamping-themed hen do and somehow left not hating the bride or the entire institution of marriage. Naturally, then, it’s also thrown up a host of trends, including a new line by Teva - once the hiking sandal of the super-geek, now the hiking sandal of the super-chic, and thus proving practicality can be fun. Chanel went mad with its SS14 bag – a graffitied rucksack complete with multicoloured hiking carabiner and rope, as seen here on Cara. If that’s a bit pricey, Sandqvist, a family-run brand 10 years old this year, does a cracking line in mustard-coloured, durable rucksacks – such as the Bob in waxed canvas – that won’t break the bank but will outlast your Herschel. Strictly speaking, these are more menswear, but if you have size-six feet or above then go mad with these from Spanish label Camper. Go full-on practical with knee-high socks from American Apparel or Adidas and lose yourself in scree. The real deal – eyelets and everything – these aren’t cheap, but the rubber lug sole means they’ll last you about a decade. Try leather leggings and a poncho, says the NY Times, or just go bare-legged if the balmy weather keeps up.Strictly speaking, these are more menswear, but if you have size-six feet or above then go mad with these from Spanish label Camper. Pretty sure our German exchange student had a pair of these, but – whatever. Super-practical sandals (the ones with many, many straps, that support your ankles and generally feature Velcro) have leapt from ironic to current thanks to Teva, which does very affordable sandals (£30, £35). As for the bejewelled Prada sandals, which come in at a pricey £930 and are beloved by Mumu, fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar China, our exchange student probably didn’t wear them. Dreamy as Moncler jackets are, you’d just trail it in the mud if you went hiking proper in one. Plus they’re not cheap. Something cropped but puffed is ideal, like this from Topshop Unique. If you want to go on a full-on trek, try North Face’s Thermoball jacket in black, which is like a little duvet, or Barbour’s collaboration with Christopher Raeburn – green-checked, waterproof hiking’s never been more chic.Dreamy as Moncler jackets are, you’d just trail it in the mud if you went hiking proper in one.
