http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/19/world/middleeast/iraq-deadly-attacks-strike-baghdad.html Version 0 of 1. At least 29 people were killed and more than 65 wounded on Thursday night in attacks in and around the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Kadhimiya in Baghdad, raising the day’s death toll to at least 45. The attacks were part of a broad upswing in sectarian violence in the capital since the Sunni extremists calling themselves the Islamic State surged toward the city a few months ago. Bombings and assassinations against both Sunnis and Shiites have become a daily occurrence. Earlier Thursday, at least 16 people were killed and dozens were wounded by four explosions and a mortar attack in and around Baghdad, police officials said. Then in the Kadhimiya area, two car bombs killed at least 24 people. A short time later, a dozen mortar rounds fired into the same area killed at least five more. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. |
