An under-strength Hamilton slipped off the top of the Scottish Premiership after being held to a goalless draw by Kilmarnock.

Accies were forced into four changes for the match at New Douglas Park and could not maintain a dominant first-half performance against Allan Johnston’s side. Their failure to win meant Inverness went two points clear at the top with victory over St Johnstone.

First-half headers from Adam Rooney and David Goodwillie and a second-half strike from Peter Pawlett helped Aberdeen earn a 3-0 victory over struggling Ross County at Pittodrie.

However, Aberdeen needed some good saves from their goalkeeper, Michael McGovern, notably from Josh Magennis and Rory McKenzie, to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

In the Championship, Hearts maintained their 100% home record with a comfortable 5-1 win at Tynecastle against lowly Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Championship with Billy King opening the scoring before Calum Gallagher restored parity before the interval. Jamie Walker put the homes side back in front and two goals from Dale Carrick and an Osman Sow penalty rounded up the scoring.

Rangers lost more ground to Hearts at the top of the Scottish Championship as they could only draw 1-1 at part-time Alloa. The teams had not met in a competitive match for 93 years but the Wasps defender Jonathan Tiffony put Barry Smith’s side into a shock lead with his 35th-minute header. However, Rangers saw their blushes spared with David Templeton’s close-range leveller with six minutes remaining.

A first-half strike from Ian McShane was enough to give managerless Queen of the South a 1-0 victory over Hibernian in a tight encounter at Palmerston Park. Hibs edged the early stages and should have taken the lead when Matthew Kennedy’s effort from point-blank range was clawed away by the Queens goalkeeper, Alex Clark.

The visiting side were punished for their profligacy though and they allowed Queens to gain a foothold in the game. The home side took advantage and scored on the half-hour when the midfielder McShane linked up smartly with Iain Russell before slotting home what proved to be the winner.
