Hornsea house fire leaves 20 dogs dead
(about 1 hour later) | |
Twenty dogs have died in their cages after a house caught fire in East Yorkshire.
The dogs were owned by private breeders who returned to their home in Graingers Road, Hornsea, to find it well alight with the dogs inside, police said.
The animals were all in cages, so were unable to escape from the blaze, which started just before 19:00 on Saturday.
Humberside Fire and Rescue said nothing could be done to save the dogs, thought to be Staffordshire bull terriers.
No people were in the house.
'Fire ripped through' | |
Paul Clucas, of the fire service, said: "It totally destroyed the timber-framed building because of the intensity of the fire.
"The fire ripped through the building."
The firefighter said the owner of the home turned up when the blaze was under way and he had to be stopped from trying to get into the house.
The fire, which was tackled by 18 firefighters, started in the detached, single-storey building but they were able to stop the blaze spreading, he added.
Alan Gregson, an eyewitness who owns a nearby holiday home, said: "It was a really bad fire with loads of flames and smoke. It's sad that animals have died."
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. | An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. |
