Ireland school bus crash injures dozens
(35 minutes later) | |
Sixty people, most of them children, have suffered minor injuries in a school bus crash in County Tyrone.
The collision betwen the bus and a car happened on Omagh Road at Drumquin on Monday morning. Both vehicles ended up in a field off the main road.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said none of those injured were in a serious condition and many were treated at the scene. The bus was travelling from Castlederg to a secondary school in Omagh.
John McPoland, of the ambulance service, said six people had “slightly more than minor injuries”. They included children whose heads had hit the bus windows, but he said nobody went through the windows.
The children and occupants of the car were taken to the South West Acute hospital and Altnagelvin hospital in Derry, McPoland said. | The children and occupants of the car were taken to the South West Acute hospital and Altnagelvin hospital in Derry, McPoland said. |
He added that Translink, the region’s public transport body, made available two buses to transport those with minor injuries to the hospitals. They were accompanied by paramedics.
The Omagh Social Democrat and Labour party councillor and GP, Dr Josephine Deehan, said: “Thankfully, it appears no one was seriously injured and that will bring great relief to the loved ones of those involved. However, this must be an extremely traumatic ordeal for everyone involved, and it will have left everyone very badly shaken.
“The incident is of great concern, and it highlights how the safety of our children is of paramount importance. We will await the outcome of the investigation to determine exactly what happened.” | “The incident is of great concern, and it highlights how the safety of our children is of paramount importance. Dr Deehan added: “I want to praise the response of emergency services, and all those involved in helping at the scene. I hope everyone makes a speedy recovery.” | Dr Deehan added: “I want to praise the response of emergency services, and all those involved in helping at the scene.
