Defense officials said a combined 41 precision-guided bombs were dropped by 16 fighter jets flown by the United States, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.
The targets were smaller refineries used to provide fuel for the Islamic State militant group and finance their operations, defense officials said. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said that six U.S. aircraft were involved in the strikes, along with 10 aircraft from the other two countries. U.S. Central Command released a video, seen above, on Thursday depicting one of the strikes carried by an Air Force F-15 fighter. The Pentagon also released the map below to show where the strikes occurred. They all appeared to be less than 75 miles from Syria’s border with Iraq, where the United States also continues to conduct airstrikes against the militants.
