A man has been jailed after a baby died when he hit a stationary car on the M6 near Cannock in May last year.

Thomas Fryer, 32, of Duncroft Road, Birmingham, had previously pleaded guilty at Stafford Crown Court to causing death by careless driving.

His Mercedes struck the back of a Seat Leon "at high speed", killing 11-day-old Dawood Hewitt, police said.

Wolverhampton Crown Court jailed Fryer for eight months and banned him from driving for three years.

Staffordshire Police said the Seat, which was being driven by his mother, was stationary in lane three of the southbound carriageway of the M6 near Hilton Park Services when it was hit.

Dawood's four-year-old and 18-month-old siblings, who were also in the car, escaped with minor injuries.

The baby was taken by air ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital where he died the next day.

Sgt Ian Tanner, from Staffordshire Police, said: "The tragic death of baby Dawood was a result of driving that was below the standard expected of safe drivers."
